It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our Life Vice Presidents, Steve Lamacraft.

Steve served in the RAF Police from 1966 until transferring to the Royal Military Police, before later serving with the Metropolitan Police. He joined the RAF Police Association in 1995 and quickly became one of its most dedicated and influential members.

Following the formation of the Essex & Suffolk Branch in 1996, Steve became its first Branch Secretary and a valued member of the Executive Council. He was subsequently appointed Branch Development Officer, playing a key role in the establishment of several new Association branches.

In February 1998, the Executive Council convened an emergency meeting at RAF Wittering after it became apparent that no arrangements had been made for that year’s National AGM and Reunion. Without hesitation, Steve volunteered for the Essex & Suffolk Branch to host the event—the first time a Branch had undertaken this responsibility. Within 24 hours, he had secured an excellent venue in Westcliff-on-Sea and negotiated an outstanding weekend package. The reunion was a tremendous success and established a model that shaped future Association events.

Steve also became Editor of the Association newsletter in 1996, giving birth to The Griff, which he edited until 1998 when increasing work commitments forced him to step down. He also served for a period as Editor of the Members’ Directory.

Throughout his years with the Association, Steve held many important appointments, including National Vice Chairman, National Membership Secretary and Chairman of the St Michael’s (Overseas) Branch. In recognition of his exceptional service and dedication at both National and Branch level, he became the 11th recipient of the Alan Rusling Memorial Award.

Steve’s passion for supporting the Association, preserving its heritage and bringing our community together has left an enduring legacy. He was respected and admired by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. His wisdom, friendship and unwavering commitment will be greatly missed, and his contribution to the RAF Police Association will continue to be felt for many years to come.
