Ian Clarke MBE – RAF Police

Sadly Ian died on 28th February 2026 and was laid to rest yesterday, 12 March 2026, in his hometown of Blackburn.

Ian lived a life defined by service, humour, and an unwavering sense of duty. Joining the Royal Air Force Police in February 1974, Ian began a remarkable 38-year career. From basic training at RAF Swinderby to his early days at RAF Scampton guarding the Vulcan force, he quickly became part of the generation of RAF Police entrusted with protecting Britain’s nuclear deterrent during the Cold War.

Even in those early years, his memories reflected the spirit of service life—hard work, strong camaraderie, and a quiet humour about the realities of the job. Ian’s career carried him across the United Kingdom and overseas, including several demanding tours in Northern Ireland as well as postings in Germany, the Falklands, Cyprus, Kuwait and the Middle East. His roles ranged from convoy and escort duties to counter-intelligence investigations, station security leadership and operational security tasks. Along the way he witnessed the changing nature of military policing and served alongside colleagues from across the services, including the Royal Military Police, and the Royal Naval Regulator Service, earning the respect of all who worked with him.

Those who served with Ian remember not only his professionalism but also his character. His stories were often filled with the small moments that define service life—long patrols around quiet airfields, improvised meals at the end of a shift, and the odd mishap that later became a tale retold with laughter. Beneath the humour was a deep pride in the RAF Police and the friendships forged through shared experience over many years. Ian retired from the RAF Police in 2012 and returned to Blackburn, having watched the service change dramatically during his career.

Never one to stand still, he went on to study Ecology and Conservation Management and later contributed his experience as a security manager during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Reflecting on his years in uniform, Ian once wrote that if given the chance he would do it all again. For those who knew him, that simple sentiment says everything about a man who served with dedication, integrity and pride. Ian was a life member of the RAF Police Association and will sadly be missed by all who knew him, our thoughts and sincerest condolences go out to Ian’s family and friends.
