It is with great sadness that we announce that, on 24 June 2026, Rod Inwood passed away peacefully at Nottingham City Hospital. His beloved wife, Shelley, shared the news with us. Rod had fought a long and courageous battle with cancer, facing his illness with the same quiet dignity, stoicism, and calm resolve that characterised his life.
Rod served in the RAF Police from 1975 until 1997, qualifying as a Counter Intelligence operative and serving with distinction both in the UK and overseas. Following his retirement from the Royal Air Force, he remained a devoted member of the RAF Police Association and was a familiar and much-valued presence at the Newark Services Club. Rod was also passionate about bringing former colleagues together, particularly those who had served at RAF Honington. Even as recently as March this year, he was actively planning the next Honington reunion—a testament to his unwavering commitment to maintaining the bonds of friendship within the RAF Police family.
For many years, Rod served as the RAF Police Association Archivist, a role he carried out with exceptional diligence, dedication, and pride. His meticulous work preserving the history of the Branch ensured that countless stories and memories would endure for future generations.
In February 2026, during a visit to RAF Police veterans at the Newark Services Club, the Provost Marshal (RAF), Group Captain Samantha Bunn, presented Rod with a Provost Marshal’s Commendation in recognition of his outstanding service as the Association’s Archivist. In her citation she said:
“Rod’s commitment to preserving the back catalogue of the Provost Parade and associated historical Branch documents has ensured the stories of so many are never forgotten.”
Rod’s passing marks the loss of a respected colleague, a loyal friend, and a dedicated custodian of RAF Police history. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As I have said in other posts, I never served with Rod and that was my loss. Met him at the Newark Services Club every Wednesday and a delight getting to know him. Condolences to Shelly and all the family. RIP 🙏 Rod
Thank you, an excellent tribute to Rod who never ever really stopped being an RAF policeman. He will be sadly missed.
Very sad news , Rod is a well respected member of the RAF Police Association.
He was a gentleman, fun loving person and I had the honour to call myself his friend.
It was wonderful to see he married Shelly, a lovely lady who gave him so much support.
