OP BANNER 50 – 14 AUGUST 2019
Dear Alan Mitchell,
A short note of thanks to Associations for your support following a successful commemorative event at the NMA marking the 50th anniversary of the start of Op Banner. Despite poor weather, nearly 2,000 veterans & their spouses, bereaved family members and representatives of the emergency services remembered the Service & Sacrifice of the 300,000 that served in Northern Ireland over 4 decades. You will also be aware that the names of 1,441 killed in the Province or as a result of terrorism overseas are listed on the Armed Forces Memorial which formed the focal point of the ceremony, led by Lt Gen James Bashall CB CBE, the Legion’s National President.
I was pleased to see that the mainstream media recognised the importance of the UK military’s role in ultimately delivering a peaceful solution as part of The Good Friday Agreement; a fact most effectively made by Ben Wallace, Def SofS, who was also able to spend time with the veterans. With your permission, I will write to you in the coming weeks with an outline of the Legion’s commemorative programme up to the end of 2020.
